New homes and renovations

The best time to get the electrical right is before the linings go on. We go through the plans with you and your builder room by room: where the beds, couches, televisions and desks will go, and where you will want a light switch when you walk in at night. It is far cheaper to add a double power point at the framing stage than to cut it in later, and we work to your builder's programme so the rough-in and fit-off happen when they should.

Switchboards and safety upgrades

Older boards with rewireable fuses, no residual current devices and no spare space were never designed for heat pumps, induction cooktops, EV chargers and a house full of electronics. Warning signs include fuses or breakers that trip often, a board that is warm or makes noise, scorch marks, or simply no room for the new circuit you need. A modern board with RCD protection cuts the power in a fraction of a second if current starts leaking to earth, which is exactly the kind of fault that injures people. The diagram on this page shows how a modern board is laid out.

Comfort, efficiency and control

Many of the homes we work in want more than lights and power points. We supply, wire and install heat pumps and home ventilation, including zoned ducted systems with wall controllers like the one in the photograph, and we design solar and energy-saving upgrades around the way your household uses power. EV chargers, security cameras and alarm systems are planned the same way, on their own circuits with the switchboard checked first. If you are renovating, it is worth planning these now so the switchboard and cabling are ready for them.

Older homes and baches

Bream Bay has plenty of older houses and baches that have been added to over the years, often by several different people. It is common to find old rubber or early plastic insulated cable, extensions wired off whatever circuit was nearest, outdoor wiring that has suffered in the salt air, and no working smoke alarms. If you have bought an older place or are planning to renovate one, an inspection first tells you what you are working with and what should be fixed before anything new is added.

Licensed, certified and tidy

Electrical work in a home has to be done by someone who holds a current practising licence, and you can check any electrician on the Electrical Workers Registration Board public register. When we finish, you get the certificates the regulations require, and we clean up as we go so the only thing you notice is the new work.

Whatever the size of your project, we aim to deliver quality workmanship, clear communication and a professional finish from start to completion.
